Braga: A Day for History and Heart
I might be halfway across the world, but today is all about you, Papa. Happy Birthday! I walked through so much incredible Catholic history today, and it made me miss you and think about you as an altar boy. This one's for you. Ciao!
A Tale of Two Augustuses
My jet lag recovery plan was simple: a slow-paced day of historical immersion, and Braga delivered. I took a short stroll from my very conveniently located Hotel Bracara Augusta on the Avenida to the Dom Diogo de Sousa Archaeological Museum. This self-guided tour was exactly what I needed—no rushing, just absorbing centuries of history at my own pace.
The museum is a treasure trove of Roman history from the city's past as Bracara Augusta. The highlight for me was a beautifully preserved Bust of Emperor Augustus himself. It’s wild to think he was the namesake for this very city.
Afterwards, I took a walk to the train station for a fascinating side quest. While digging for a new parking lot, the city unearthed a section of the ancient Pre-Roman Baths—a completely accidental and incredible discovery. It’s a perfect reminder that in Braga, you’re never far from a hidden layer of history.
A Taste of History
Dinner was a treat at my hotel’s restaurant, aptly named Centurium. The food was delightful, but the real fun was in the details. From the Bust of Emperor Augustus at the museum to the name of my hotel and its restaurant, it’s clear this city loves to honor its Roman past. It’s a fun, little theme that ties my whole day together.
