History, Wine, and New Friends in Braga

From the doorstep of my magnificent Hotel Bracara Augusta, I set out for another day of exploration. My guide met me at the Arco da Porta Nova, a truly impressive arch that served as the grand western entrance to the city's medieval walls. It’s not just a beautiful blend of Baroque and Neoclassical design; it's a piece of living history that has welcomed everyone from kings to archbishops for centuries.

Our walk led us to a remnant of Braga’s castle wall. He pointed out something I would have completely missed: distinct marks on the stone blocks. These aren't graffiti; they are the "signatures" of the medieval masons who meticulously crafted each stone. It was a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the artisans who built this city.

Our next stop was the Museu dos Biscainhos. As we explored this stunning 17th-century palace, we could feel the city buzzing with anticipation. The staff was delicately hanging white decorations and lights, getting the museum ready for the annual Braga White Night celebration—a three-day cultural event. It was a special treat to see the preparations for this modern festival in such a historical setting.

After the museum, it was time for a break. We settled in at a little park near the Museu, a passionate sommelier, he gave me a private crash course in Portuguese wines. He walked me through the country's diverse wine regions and the unique varietals they produce, bringing out local delicacies from his restaurant to pair with each one. We bonded over our shared love of wine and history, and I feel like I made a true friend.

Back at my hotel, the day wasn’t over. I enjoyed a beautiful dinner at the hotel's Centurium restaurant. My dish tonight was a lovely shrimp risotto paired with a glass of local wine. Every meal here is a celebration of Portuguese flavors.

What a day! Filled with history, art, newfound knowledge of wine, and the best kind of travel—making a new friend.
